4 Wheel drive Land Rover

New Landrover

On 19th April 2004 Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre was presented with a purpose built Land Rover Defender 130 crew cab by the Sepilok Orangutan Appeal UK and Land Rover, in a joint sponsorship deal.

The Centres old 4 wheel drive Mazda, which was used by the Rescue and Relocation Team, became unrepairable several months ago. The Centre had no budget available with which to purchase a new vehicle to enable them to continue this very essential work and therefore the Appeal offered to do its very best to secure one for them.

Sepilok regularly receives calls from plantations and villages reporting orangutans that have strayed from the forest and are eating the crops, or reporting ones that have been injured and sometimes baby orangutans who have been orphaned.

During the last two years the Appeal had approached numerous manufacturers for help in proving a new vehicle but with no luck. So you can imagine how delighted we were when Land Rover came up Trumps and agreed to sell the vehicle to us at a discounted rate. A generous donation from a supporter in America shortened the waiting time and we were able to place the order.

Land Rover presentationThe Presentation Ceremony was attended by Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Karim Bujang, Director of Wildlife Mr Mehedi Andau, May Fung from Land Rover Asia and Sue Sheward representing the Appeal. Malaysian TV3 and numerous other reports all wanted shots of the vehicle, which is the first of its kind in Sahah!

Within 24 hours of handing the vehicle over the Centre received an emergency call and Senior Ranger Elise Tam took the vehicle on its first mission!

Our special thanks to Land Rover Asia and the USA Supporter who made it possible.
