Projects
Facility upgrades & refurbishments
Including specialist enclosures, clinic refurbishment and nursery enhancements
The clinic
Since our first project at Sepilok, the building of a nursery enclosure to enable the young orangutans to play and exercise in a safe environment, we've continued to fund many more refurbishments including:
- Intensive care unit for seriously ill orangutans, complete with staff facilities to enable 24 hour care
- Refurbishment of the quarantine ward with enhanced ventilation and drainage systems
- Sick bay for orangutans who are unwell and require medical treatment
- New night nursery with larger enclosures
- Specialist enclosures for orangutans requiring additional care
- Replacement of the nursery enclosure
The nurseries
We regularly invest funds for the ongoing maintenance and refurbishment of the indoor and outdoor nurseries at Sepilok.
Due to the humidity in Borneo, natural materials, like wood, can deteriorate quickly. By replacing them we can ensure that they are safe for use by the orangutans that live there.
Most recently, we provided new platforms and ropes. These provisions are key to orangutan development and encourage exploration into the forest which promotes independence.
Emergency funding
Borneo can experience extreme weather patterns. Sadly, the climate there is becoming less predictable and more violent due to climate change. As a result, storms can cause a lot of damage. We provide funds immediately to carry out emergency repairs to ensure the safety of the orangutans and our team.
