Health checks
Orangutans, especially the young and vulnerable orphans, can experience sickness. At Sepilok, they have a routine check-up much like humans do. The check-up includes a basic physical examination and blood sampling for general health screening. We are pleased to announce that the orangutans at Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre have had their bi-annual health check funded by the charity.
Many different diseases can make orangutans ill, including major illnesses such as hepatitis and malaria as well as COVID-19, parasitic infections, and other diseases. The orangutans are tested bi-annually and new arrivals to Sepilok are quarantined for a period of time so that if they do carry any illnesses the spread of infection is cut off.
We once again would like to thank our supporters for their generous donations which have funded vital work for the betterment of the orangutans' lives and for the future of this critically endangered species.
