Firefighting teams in Borneo are on high alert, as drought grips the region and fires destroy orangutan forest habitat. Funds are urgently needed to combat the flames.
A strong El Niño event is currently underway, drought is expected to continue into 2016 and thousands of peat fires are raging across the island. Thick smog from peat fires has shrouded the region since August, flights have been cancelled, schools closed, air pollutant levels are rated “dangerous” and local people are sick, with thousands of premature deaths occurring.
The Sabangau Forest is at high risk of fire, posing a serious threat to the world’s largest orangutan population, plus the many other amazing wildlife species that live here. Fire has already damaged our conservation partner OuTrop's patrol post and access railway, and has burned forest less than 3 km away from their research camp.
