Honouring 20 years of incredible service
Ibri celebrates two decades of exceptional care at Sepilok.
7 November 2025
This month we celebrated a very special milestone for one of our longest-serving team members at Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Ibritinah, known to everyone as Ibri, has devoted her working life to looking after the orphaned, injured and displaced orangutans who come to the centre in need of care.
As a veterinary nurse, Ibri is at the heart of the daily care the orangutans receive. She carries out health checks, keeps a close eye on their weight and hydration, prepares meals tailored to the needs of each youngster, and helps maintain the medical supplies and equipment. She also assists the vet with procedures such as taking blood samples, treating minor wounds and ailments, assisting in surgeries, and regular health assessments.
But Ibri’s role goes far beyond medicine. She is also a surrogate carer for the orphans, feeding, comforting and guiding them through their early years. Her calm, patient presence gives the youngsters the attention they would normally get from their mothers, helping them grow, learn essential behaviours and prepare for life in the forest.
To mark her 20 years of dedication, we presented Ibri with a sculpture of an orangutan mother and baby, mounted on antique oak with a plaque of thanks. She was genuinely moved by the gift, and the whole team joined in celebrating her incredible commitment.
